Rishi Sunak made light of claims he’ll soon exit Westminster for California as he made his last appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions as Tory leader.

The former premier engaged in a final battle with Sir Keir Starmer in the House of Commons this afternoon before he stands down as Leader of the Opposition.

It has long been speculated that Mr Sunak and his family will relocate to their plush home in Santa Monica when his spell in high-level politics ends.

But he insisted this afternoon he would be remaining as MP for Richmond and Northallerton.

‘Today is my last appearance at PMQs and I am happy to confirm reports that I will now be spending more time in the greatest place on Earth,’ Mr Sunak quipped.

‘Where the scenery is indeed worthy of a movie set and everybody is a character – that’s right, if anyone needs me I will be in Yorkshire!’

The former PM used his six allotted questions to Sir Keir to make reference to some of his passions, including cricket and Artificial Intelligence.

Mr Sunak also said he was ‘proud’ to have been the first British-Asian prime minister, adding: ‘But I was even prouder that it was not that big a deal.

‘And that speaks volumes about the values of the British people, of our country, and this Parliament.’

In response, the Prime Minister said of his predecessor in No10: ‘We were all proud to see him standing there as prime minister, representing our diverse country.’

But, in what had been a friendlier-than-usual session of PMQs, Sir Keir made a swipe about the Tory drama that preceded Mr Sunak becoming premier.

‘Judging by the speed with which his party goes through leaders, he may be back here before too long!,’ the Labour leader said.

Mr Sunak will be replaced as Tory leader by either Kemi Badenoch or Robert Jenrick when the party’s leadership contest ends on Saturday.
